Nine-run seventh lifts A's over Rangers

Baseball Betting Lines

06/01/2008 - Arlington, TX (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Jack Hannahan and Bobby Crosby each drove in three runs, as the Oakland Athletics used a nine-run seventh inning to rally past the Texas Rangers, 13-8, and avoid a three-game sweep.

Jack Cust belted a two-run homer, while Travis Buck and Mark Ellis both clubbed solo home runs for Oakland, which snapped a season-high-tying four- game losing streak. Kurt Suzuki also knocked in two runs.

Greg Smith allowed seven runs on seven hit in five-plus innings for the A's, but did not factor in the decision. Chad Gaudin (4-3) completed the sixth inning to earn the win.

Milton Bradley smashed a two-run homer and finished with three RBI for Texas, which stopped a two-game winning streak. Josh Hamilton added a solo blast. Michael Young went 1-for-4 and scored two runs, extending his hitting streak to 17 games.

Scott Feldman gave up four runs -- three earned -- on four hits in six innings for the Rangers. Jamey Wright (3-2) failed to record an out in the seventh, surrendering four runs and was credited with the loss. Robinson Tejeda was charged with three runs and didn't retire a batter in the ill-fated seventh inning.

The Rangers scored five times in the bottom of the sixth to build a 7-4 lead, but Oakland countered with a nine-run assault in the next frame. Wright started the inning for Texas and Ellis greeted him with a single to center. Buck then worked a walk and Carlos Gonzalez doubled to bring in a run. Wright continued to struggle on the mound, issuing a free pass to Daric Barton to load the bases.

Tejeda was summoned from the bullpen to douse the fire, but he didn't fare any better. After Suzuki drew a walk, Hannahan stroked a two-run double to right field. Crosby then laced a two-run single to center, which resulted in another pitching change.

Frank Francisco took over on the mound and Cust launched a 96-mph fastball into the seats in right field. Francisco then retired Eric Chavez for the first out of the inning. Ellis' fifth home run of the season capped the scoring barrage.

"Rough time for the bullpen," Texas manager Ron Washington said. "Just couldn't get out of the seventh inning. We put runs on the board, they just put up more."

Hamilton's 15th home run of the season with two gone in the ninth accounted for the final score.

"Our guys fought back," Oakland manager Bob Geren said. "Good pitching by Smith, they just kept coming up with hits."

The Rangers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first on Bradley's ninth round- tripper of the season.

Oakland manufactured a run in the fourth. Hannahan led off with a double, advanced to third on Feldman's balk and scampered home when Crosby grounded out to the shortstop.

The A's then pulled ahead with three runs in the fifth. Oakland tied the game on Buck's solo home run. Gonzalez followed with a double and, after Barton drew a walk, came around to score on Suzuki's RBI single. David Murphy's fielding error allowed Barton to advance to third on the play and Hannahan's sacrifice fly gave the visitors a 4-2 lead.

Texas exploded for five runs in the sixth. Ian Kinsler singled to leadoff the frame and Young worked a walk to put runners on first and second. Consecutive singles by Hamilton, Bradley and Murphy scored three runs and chased Smith from the game. Gaudin relieved Smith and gave up a single to Gerald Laird to load the bases for Marlon Byrd, who popped up for the first out of the inning. Then, with pinch-hitter Frank Catalanotto at the plate, Gaudin uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Bradley to score. Catalanotto then grounded into a fielder's choice, scoring Murphy.

Game Notes

Kinsler has hit safely in 16 straight games...Barton walked four times...The Rangers left five men on base, while Oakland stranded two...Before the game, Texas announced that pitcher Vicente Padilla will miss his scheduled start on Monday to tend to a family emergency in Nicaragua.

Michael Vick is back, Brett Favre isn't and the NFC East remains the best division in the NFC, maybe in all of football.

As players start to gather for the start of another season, some things change and some stay the same in the world of the NFL.

Bet 2010 Super Bowl Odds

The NFC East has been the dominant division in the National Conference for a while, despite limited playoff success, save for the New York Giants surprise Super Bowl win two seasons ago.

Hell, there's a generation of kids in Texas who have never seen the Cowboys win a playoff game (last win was in 1996).

But collectively, the Giants, Eagles, Cowboys and Redskins (well, maybe not so much the Redskins) are as good as a division gets in an NFC conference that has struggled to stay competitive with the AFC side.

Sports bettors have both acknowledged the NFC East's dominance, as one glance at the NFL future odds menu will show.

Looking over the NFL betting odds at online sports book MySportsbook.com we see the top three teams listed to win the NFC Championship are all from the NFC East:

Dallas Cowboys - 7 - 1

Philadelphia Eagles - 13 - 2

New York Giants - 9 - 2

Slotting in behind these three are two teams from the NFC North: the Minnesota Vikings (15-2) and the Chicago Bears (10-1).

Again, despite the lack of recent playoff success, the Dallas Cowboys are popular with the sports betting community, as they hold 14% of all the money wagered on who will win the NFC Championship.

So far, the New York Giants are the bettors' favorite to represent their conference in the Super Bowl, as they have 24% of the overall NFC Championship betting volume.

And what about the Philadelphia Eagles? For the most part, the Eagles had a very productive offseason, the kind that could bring them back to the top.

They had a good draft adding the likes of WR Jeremy Maclin and RB LeSean McCoy.

Unfortunately, the team received a blow when long-time defensive coordinator Jim Johnson passed away on Tuesday.

But this team will make a real run at the division title this year. Going into the regular season, Philly is listed at +240 to win the division.

Last season the Eagles were 9-6-1 SU and 10-6 ATS.

Teams from the NFC East will play teams from the AFC West in the regular season and the Eagles haven't really been a good bet in the last 20 games against the likes of San Diego, Oakland, K.C. and Denver, only going 8-12 ATS.

Two seasons removed from that Super Bowl title, the New York Giants see themselves listed as the odds-on favorite in NFC East championship futures at +162.

Plaxico Burress is gone and with him all the bad publicity surrounding the gun in the sweatpants incident, but can they replace him in the offense?

Last season the Giants were a very reliable bet going 12-4 ATS.

In the Giants' last 20 games against fellow teams from the NFC East; they are 13-7 ATS.

Dallas is listed at +240 to win the division.

Dallas went 9-7 SU and 7-9 ATS last season and with the amount of talent the Cowboys have, a similar performance won't do.

The Cowboys have been atrocious against divisional rivals, going 6-14 ATS in their last 20.

The Washington Redskins are longshots to win the division at +550.
